A father. A mentor. A leader. Still, a soldier.

Wayward Soldiers is the second book in the military fantasy series The Tyrus Chronicle.

Tyrus expected his world to change once the Geneshan War ended. He expected it to change more once he finally reunited with his family.

He did not foresee that the biggest upheaval to his world would be caused by Turine sorcerers tampering with an ancient Geneshan artifact in the capital city of Hol.

The land stands devastated and covered in a haze. Sorcerers are unable to use their power. The king and capital are likely destroyed. Raiders seek to profit in a world without law.

Tyrus decides that he must get his loved ones to the safety of the Southern Kingdoms if they are to have any chance of surviving. The quick flight he plans turns into a labored journey when local townsfolk join his party. Expecting only new dangers now before him, Tyrus fails to anticipate old ones haunting his steps.

Following on Forgotten Soldiers, this second book is a gloomy tale of survival in a medieval fantasy world ending. The book opens on a scene of apocalypse as war veteran Tyrus hides in a cellar with his wizardly sister Ava, his 2 children Myra and Zadok, his war companions the brothers Dekar and Ira, and some civilians. After many days, the destructive effects triggered by a powerful Geneshan relic begin to relent. The artefact was seized during the war by Tyrus on behalf of the Turine Empire, an act of valour that ended the war and got Tyrus released from duty. His only wish now is to flee the secondary effects of the artefact and a ravaged land, and take his loved ones to the relative safety of the distant Southern Kingdom of Gersh. Because of his military skills and his natural resistance to magic, Tyrus reluctantly emerges as the leader of a growing group of refugees. Their progress is constantly hampered by roving bands of former soldiers, a torn landscape that makes maps irrelevant, and the continuing cataclysm, but the journey allows Tyrus to reacquaint himself with his kids after a decade of absence. While I enjoyed the first book of the series, this one was a more difficult read for a number of reasons: the story evolves at a slow pace, the plot isn't very elaborate, many of the dialogs between lead characters don't seem to flow naturally, and it's very unlikely that in such circumstances a hardened soldier and former commander of military hit squads would suddenly become so consensual and democratic, and reluctant to use violence, even against those who enslaved his children, abused his wife, and try to kill him (not once, but twice) after he returns. The reaction of a former comrad-in-arms as they meet on opposite sides of a skirmish also makes no sense (*avoiding spoiler*), and neither does the dragging of an entire army in the wrong direction for months, all for the sake of finding one man. This second book was disappointing.

Where's the next one already? Im dyin' here...
Mr. Simon... Speed it up!!! )
A great follow up sequel. Can't wait for book 3. Please read it. Remember to give your respects to those who serve.
This book was the best in the series. But I had to finish the entire thing, you know.
The story continues and we see more of the back story and integration of refugees into our merry little band, under the only system Tyrus know - soldiering.
Interesting fantasy setting using Imperial Rome as a background instead of knights and damsels. Writing carried quickly to the events. Some things were glossed over but explained latter in order to not interrupt the story but still provide for adequate world building. Good read and looking forward to the rest of the series.
Loved the second instalment of the series. The characters are great there's good fighting in it and the story is great.
Really enjoyed first book in this series. Second book is a solid continuation of the story, fleshing out more characters and show how biases give way to need when survival is at stake. Can't wait for next book. Author's other military fiction series Blood and Tears, I also recommend.
